Praise for nsfw

from critics AND FILM-MAKERS

'Rarely have I seen such precision in a short film.  Absolutely gorgeous to look at.'

Jerry Chandler, CEO, Synapse Films

‘Very well done… a taut, immersive and surprising thriller.  I really appreciated how unpredictable it was, and how [the film-makers] deftly played with what we thought these characters’ intentions were against their actual intent.  The social networking incorporation was also one of the better uses of that particular phenomena that I’ve seen in quite a while… a really stunning little short.’

Cameron Beyl, The Director's Series

'Morbid and desolate...  NSFW masterfully takes you to a place you don't want to be...  and yet, somehow, you can't seem to leave.'

Jason C. Hignite, Festival Director, HorrorHound Weekend

'Wonderful.  I am not sure I have ever watched a short film that has kept me glued to my seat as this one.'

Claire Ferguson, Editor, credits include Eyes Wide Shut, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Director's Statement

NSFW was designed as a ‘mini-feature’: encapsulating everything I wanted to see and feel in a short film.  I wanted to make a thriller that examines some of the most troubling aspects of our digital future: that makes us ask real questions about the inescapable new world we are all becoming participants in.  And I didn’t want this discussion to be made trite or ineffective by its format: although a short, I wanted the film to show a proper journey, and tell us a story that has real consequences.

Inasmuch as the film has only two characters - who never explicitly engage in a real-world conversation - it is really a drama played out silently with occasional monologue and voice over - and so represented a visual and structural challenge in effectively using the grammar of pure cinema. Using a specially designed rig so that we could recreate the effect of a crane within the tightly-packed pine trees of Macclesfield forest, we used slow and deliberate camera movements that reflected the looming dread of what was to come.  Although containing a potent mix of genre, commercial and experimental influences which can be noted in the many hidden references throughout the film, particular inspiration was taken from the technique and texture of the early sequences in two of the most masterful executions of the slow-build horror in modern times: Ridley Scott’s ‘Alien’, and Stanley Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’.

I am very proud of my work in NSFW, and of the cast and crew who made it with me.  I believe we created a great example of a low-budget film that fulfils much higher ambitions, and that we managed to make a half-hour short film that does not overstay its running time.
